A member asked:

What are some safer solutions for chronic, severe constipation (one bowel movement a week, sometimes less)? my stool is so rock-solid that it clogs the toilet every time. i know laxatives aren't good to use long-term unless absolutely necessary?

Physical exercise, such as running or jogging plays a critical role in keeping bowel movements regular when done consistently few times a week. Hydration is next with a log to keep foods that are causing trouble most of the time when ingested.

You may take a fiber laxative like Metamucil and drink enough water daily so that your urine is colorless. For the long term you may try to increase your intake of fiber foods. I agree with the good advice from previous responders. I've had success with, if you have no urge for BMs, to take a daily bowel stimulant like senokotS according to instructions.
