A member asked:

I've had swollen submandibular and cervical nodes for over a year- ive had two ultrasounds that favor "reactive" node diagnosis. what does this mean? i've also seen the term "nonspecific lymphadenitis uns" what does this mean also? thank you?

The job of the lymph nodes is to strain the serum that moves through the tissues outside of the blood vessels. They remove debris and reactive chemicals from bug bites or inflammation. The term 'reactive' just means they have been working. 'Non-specific' is a term than implies no specific cause. Lymphadenitis means the nodes have been enlarged while they work, which is expected.

If the nodes have not become larger in a year, these are malignant. You may feel the nodes every couple of weeks, if any of the lymph glands doubles in size, becomes painful, ulcerates, or other nodes become enlarged, or you develop fever, or lose weight, you should see a doctor. Wish you good health!
