There are no FDA approved ocular solutions containing N-acetylcysteine. There are off-label uses of N-acetylcysteine including several clinical trials that use the intravenous solution since it is sterile and preservative-free. A topical form has been shown to be effective for hyperkeratosis and scaling skin in hereditary ichthyoses which also causes eye problems but the smell limits its use.
