Mainly genetic...: There is a hereditary predisposition to developing lipomas, and some feel that they may arise after some form of trauma. You don't really need to do anything to them, but the best way to get rid of them is to have them surgically excised. If you do have it removed, make sure there is a biopsy of the lesion just to be sure.
