A member asked:

I have mild asthma. my lung doc moved. i went to an allergist for tests. no allergies. he also treats asthma, and offered to treat me. today he took me off montelukast, saying that i don't have allergies, so it's not needed. does that make sense?

A doctor has provided 1 answer

I wouldn't consider it first line treatment for serious asthma and it's not suitable to relieve an acute asthmatic episode. However it is used to prevent asthmatic attacks in mild cases as well as to prevent exercise induced asthma. In my experience allergists didn't treat asthmatics when hospitalized. For this reason I favor a pulmonologist to treat and follow asthmatic patients.
