A member asked:

I have been intensely cycling recently but somewhat less so for a few years. i am 69 and a man. today my hrmax was 178 on an intense ride, my resting hr is 51 & just measured my blood pressure at 107/77. does intense chronic exercise increase hrmax?

HRmax is the highest heart rate that can be achieved by a person, usually through exercise and can show how hard one’s heart can work during physical exertion. It is usually determined by genetic factors and it also diminishes with age and training doesn’t seem to have any impact on it (Age-predicted maximal heart rate revisited. J Am Coll Cardiol. 37(1):153-6).
