A viral gastrointestinal tract infection can last a week. Antibiotics are not effective for this. If diarrhea persists get a stool culture to check for pathogenic bacteria and parasites. For now, drink lots of room temperature but not gassy fluids, eat a soft nonspicy or nongreasy diet, take kaopectate or Imodium as needed. Take simethicone 1/2 hour after meals to prevent gas buildup.
