A stye, or chalazion, is a blockage or infection in one or more of the oil glands of the eyelid (Meibomian gland). These glands open near the margin of the lid. It is possible that some scarring has occurred leading to repeated obstructions or infections. It can be treated by an ophthalmologist either medically or surgically, usually in the office.
