A member asked:

I went to the er yesterday morning with what appeared to be very extreme anxiety with an elevated heart rate of upwards 180 at times. was giving metoprolol to slow it down. i have propranolol at home, can i take that instead if it happens again?

A doctor has provided 1 answer

Do NOT attempt to treat abnormal heart rhythms on your own. Take the metoprolol as your doctor recommended, and if you develop a rapid pulse again while on the medication, return to the ER. Do not independently add propranolol. If not done previously, do have a cardiologist involved.
