Blood clots in a calf vein ( thrombophlebitis) occurs when a vein is damaged or when blood stagnates in the vein due to inadequate mobilization such as occurs on a long automobile trip. or with prolonged bed rest. The lower leg, ankle or foot may be swollen. The calf is usually tender on compressing it. Clots may break off and travel to the lungs (pulmonary embolism) which can be fatal.
