I regard neurosurgery as among the most difficult&demanding specialties in the medical profession. The operations are often extremely long&arduous &demand extraordinary stamina and concentration. I've seen world class athletes try to observe a neurosurgical procedure&couldn't stand as long as the surgeon did. You can be as busy as you want to be & work out of a few hospitals. The path to becoming a competent and successful neurosurgeon is long and arduous, taking many years. Once training is finished, emergency procedures are not infrequent, and the surgeon works nights and weekends. Many procedures take literally hours, some over 12 hours, and the field requires toleration of stress and fatigue. Burnout has been a challenge for many.
