Antidepressant medications are not absolutely contraindicated in liver disease and most of them are not hepatotoxic but dosage may need to be adjusted by the severity of the liver disease because these drugs are usually metabolized by the liver.

If the person is on medication for the primary biliary cholangitis ,which is an autoimmune disorder,, the issue is will there be a potential harmful interaction between the antidepressant & the PBC meds. This calls for collaboration between the 2 prescribers as well as consultation with the pharmacist for best care. SSRI's, for example are tricky to work with.
