Bilirubin is processed in the liver as conjugated or unconjugated, and reported in the lab as direct or indirect bilirubin. Typically only total bilirubin is reported on metabolic panels. In the absence of symptoms and normal liver enzymes, sometimes total bilirubin levels can fluctuate in individuals who have a harmless condition called Gilbert Syndrome
