Discuss an oral antihistamine with your physician, calamine soothes but does not treat an allergic reaction. The few hours before the hives reaction are important to consider. Review possible triggers and exposures during this time frame. Watch for signs of shortness of breath and wheezing. If this occurs, proceed to the Emergency room.

If you're breaking out in hives, a hot bath will cause vasodilation of your arterioles and will aggravate hives. A cold shower or cool bath, on the other hand, will sooth the itching. Let the lotion dry before taking a cool bath.
