Antihistamines: Antihistamines are the main treatment choice for hives. If the side effects of Benadryl (diphenhydramine) are a problem or it is not effective, other otc antihistamines can be tried. Allegra, zyrtec and Claritin are all approved for the treatment of hives. Finding and avoiding the trigger of the hives is important, but frequently elusive. If symptoms persist or worsen see an allergist or dermatologist.
