A member asked:

What would cause a high ejection fraction if the echocardiogram was otherwise normal? my ef was 83% but was the only abnormality on the echo. i'm not worried since the dr. didn't really say anything about it. i'm just curious what would cause it?

The EF is a measurement of the efficiency of the heart and lower than normal values are those most worrisome. However, there are heart conditions that can produce higher than normal values and you should share your concerns with the doc to be sure s/he has excluded that possibility before accepting it as okay.

If your 12 lead EKG as well as your echocardiogram were normal ( except for the LV EF of 83%) that rules out hypertrophic cardiomyopathy which can cause life threatening arrhythmias& is the most common cause.of abnormally high LV EF. It's also important to note that EF by echos are not as accurate as by angiography. Nevertheless, it's best to repeat your EKG& echo in a year or see a cardiologist
