My biopsy from july 1 showed abscesses in colon and rectum. getting antibiotics tomorrow but nurse said i will probably need surgery. they are painful and it is difficult to sit down and remain seated. how serious is this?

If you haven't already done so, it would be worthwhile to get an opinion from a colorectal surgeon.

Confusing story: if abscesses were diagnosed 5 weeks ago, usually antibiotic treatment would have been prescribed at that time. If not, or if not clearing up despite antibiotics, surgery sounds reasonable. How serious? Can't tell without more information; but however serious it is, probably it will become more so if treatment (perhaps including surgery) is delayed. Ask your doctor directly.
