I have severe iron deficient anemia. in a 2 week period, ferritin went from 4 (77fe), to 26 (126fe) and down to 15 (23fe). taking large doses of oral iron. no occult blood, cancer markers or obvious blood loss. are there other causes to check?

Yes this depends on your ethnicity and familial background. I assume you do not eat clay but used to run into this as a cause of iron deficient anemia when I was at Duke in Durham years ago. Discuss with your Dr. And if eating clay tell them as they may not know that cause any more.

You may be unable to absorb iron. Celiac disease affecting the duodenum only can cause isolated iron deficiency without more general malabsorption. Your doctor can give you intravenous iron to bypass the absorption issue.
