I was diagnosed with scabies. my dermatologist told me to apply permethrin lotion 5% only on affected areas for 10 days continuous. i read online that only one application a week is necessary. should i be heeding the docs advice?

I generally advise to apply to all surfaces neck to toes overnight once. Removing the next morning. Retreatment in a week is a common addition to be sure they are killed. You do what you wish.
