Not a good choice: Nonprescription nix (permethrin 1%) is used to treat lice but is not strong enough to cure scabies. Prescription Permethrin 5%(elimite) cream is the most common medication to treat scabies and it works well. Lindane is mentioned in the above answer- it is rarely used now and carries a boxed warning because it has caused seizures and death in some age groups and low weight individuals.
