It's not effective. If it is still small, hard and you do not feel sick, just apply warm compress 10-15 minutes several times a day. You can take tylenol or advil as needed for pain, oral antibiotic is not required. If the boil does not get smaller or drain spontaneously in a couple days, it should be drained (lanced). For a big and fluctuating boil which could not drain by itself, have it lanced.
