What exactly is peritonitis and would you be in a lot of pain if you had it? could it be very mild discomfort? how could i tell if i had it? would i be very sick and could it go on for months undiagnosed? any info is appreciated?

Peritonitis is inflamation of the linning of the abdomen. The severity of pain depends on the extent of inflammation and the cause. It could be local and contained if there is a small leak from the bowels that is walled off however the best thing to do is to be evaluated rather than carry the anxiety that in itself could be harmful.

Peritonitis occurs when bacteria enter the space in your abdomen that houses your intestines, liver, spleen, etc. There are no direct openings to your peritoneum, so any bacteria would have to come from an infection in your internal organs, or a breach of the abdominal wall (wound, trauma) It is painful and acute. It would not be mild discomfort over months. See a Dr for a full exam and labs.
