You may be experiencing an occipital neuralgia. The occipital nerve on either side exits the spine at the base of the neck,travels up the back of the scalp behind the ear. It can be pinched by tense neck muscles or become irritable, causing pain. Swallowing usually doesn't affect it though. It usually resolves on its own. If symptoms persist consult your MD or a neurologist for evaluation & adv
