EMLA is a cream that will anesthetize the areas to which it is applied. Consider the procedure you are going to have and apply it to the area involved with a little extra margin to be safe. This can avoid the need to inject a local anesthetic in that sensitive area. It takes a while to work, which is why the 30-minute interval is advised. Apply it too soon and the effect wares off.
