Elma cream: Emla (lidocaine and prilocaine) cream takes some time to work. The i've will be in much quicker using a small amount of injectable anesthetic for this.

How can I manage the negative emotions associated with giving birth to a preemie?

Talk about it...: These feelings can be normal. I recommend that you discuss your feelings openly with your partner, family & friends. Often talking about your feelings helps. If that isn't making you feel better talk to your md. Mom's of premature babies often feel guilty about the early birth - even when they did nothing wrong. If symptoms persist talk to your md and be screened for possible postpartum depression.

Cooking oil: While there are lots of remedies, the one that worked the best for me was cooking oil. It is edible and easily absorbed into the skin. I would apply a small dab on the nipples after nursing. Worked really well.

Breast feed: Your breast may engorged after giving birth. If you choose to breast feed--> go ahead and feed your baby. It should help symptomatically. If you choose not to breast feed--> wear tight compressive bra and minimize nipple stimulation. If your breast start cracking and one of them get red/inflamed, you may have mastitis and may require further evaluation by your physician.
