Transmission often occurs when there are skin rashes (such as cold sores in the mouth or groin). However, viral shedding can also occur without the rash. Avoiding sharing items that touch the genitals and mouth as well as kissing and sexual intercourse can reduce the risk. Medication use, depending how you take it, reduces the active disease duration and breakouts, but not the viral spread.
