The primary difference is there is no more Insulin production from pancreas in patient with type 1 diabetes mellitus which is often diagnosed at young ages and that's why we sometimes call it juvenile diabetes, mainly an autoimmune disease destroys the pancreatic cells (Langerhans cells) which produce insulin. So when type 1 DM is diagnosed, you have to treat with Insulin right away.

Type ! diabetes is insulin dependent, always needing insulin injection or infusion. Type 2 can be controlled with insulin or medication. Always take your medication to avoid a diabetic coma, and follow a recommended diet.
