You should investigate the cause of your bad upper back pain. Nerve root pain by a bulging intervertebral disc or bone spur can cause jabbing, sharp pains or a steady ache. See your MD,an orthopedic specialist or visit a spine clinic to start the workup which will most likely include xrays and/ or an MRI of the thoracic spine.

It is not feasible to provide a meaningful opinion without additional history, physical examination and may be some tests. Regular aerobic exercise will strengthen you muscles and improve flexibility. Exercise enough to raise core body temperature manifested by sweating. It may take weeks for you to see the beneficial result. . Wish you good health.
