If your past & current diet is somehow deficient in the vitamins needed for your system a supplement may be beneficial. If not, they simply flush out of your body in feces or urine within a day or two.

If you are eating a normal mixed diet, you do not need high potency vitamins. Excess of vitamin A, Vitamin D and very high doses of pyridoxine and niacin can be harmful. For healthy diet: http://www.choosemyplate.gov/., exercise 30 minutes/day, drink enough water daily so your urine is mostly colorless, have safe sex, no tobacco alcohol weed or street drugs. Get HPV vaccine. Wish you good health!

Most physicians would agree that high dose multivitamins aren't necessary. However, a fairly recent study showed that seniors who took a regular multivitamin daily did better on cognitive testing after some months than those that didn't take them. I now recommend a good multivitamin like centrum silver at least for seniors.
