I smashed my middle finger in a drawer several hours ago. i cant seem to grip anything even slightly without pain shooting from my fingertip, through my hand and up to my elbow. no other signs of breakage. what could be causing the shooting pain?

Best is to see your MD or urgent care center. For you have to be examined. In the meantime apply an ice pack to the area, Hope you feel better.

Injury to the nerve could cause the shooting pain and it is going to take a few hours to days to subside depending on the extent of the injury. If getting worse I would suggest to be evaluated immediately especially if there is swelling of the finger.
