A small confusion: does a liver cirrhosis happen from a temporary damage to the liver or does it happen only if the liver is permanently damaged?

For liver cirrhosis to happen it takes years of inflammation that can be due to chronic infections or long term exposure to substances that are toxic to the liver, alcohol for example. Some other times there might be congenital conditions that result in liver cirrhosis.
