With low muscular activity during sleep, heart rates can drop to the 40's, especially in those individuals with habits of exercise and increased muscular activity during wakefulness. Consult a cardiologist for an exam and possible EKG and stress testing to be certain this is not an arythmia.

The heart is a pump distributing blood and oxygen to the body. When we are less active or asleep the need for oxygen is reduced and the bumping of blood and oxygen decreases and the heart rate is a reflection of the reduced need for oxygen to th ebody and brain.
