A member asked:

I get 1/2 times per month apthous ulcers but without anything else, is rheumatologist visit warranted? according to my gp these are just apthous ulcers but i am still worried if it is not something more than that like behcet's syndrome?

Behcet's disease is described as repetitive ulcerative lesions, which can unpredictably recur, and is an auto-immune disease involving inflammation of blood vessels. Herpes type I can also recur secondary to stress, but usually in only one location. See an infectious disease physician for guidance.

Aphthous ulcers are called canker sores and occur in the mouth on the gums or cheek. Last two weeks and are painful. Treatment consists of OTC products that are many. If you eat acidic foods and fruits, or are stressed and have a injury in your mouth you will come down with this problem. Reduce your stress and or your acidic diet, apples, oranges, lemons, tomatoes and others. No specialist needed.

Aphthous ulcers are very common and are made worse/set off by the triggers already mentioned. In women, hormonal levels can affect them, with more canker sores occurring during menstruation. They often improve when someone is on oral contraceptives or following pregnancy. There are sometimes supplements recommended or certain toothpastes. Your regular doctor or dentist should be able to advise you
