The ESR is a crude test developed decades ago that measures how fast blood cells drop into a stack in a tube. It is a measure of how heavy the cells are, carrying materials that represent inflammation. It can remain elevated for months after all the germs of an infection are killed. Duration of antibiotic treatments are based on research that defines how long to use them/too long creates problems.
