A member asked:

Very good evening doctors. if someone is diagnosed with prostate cancer, shouldn't the first treatment be radiation or chemotherapy, rather than an invasive prostatectomy where the prostate is completely taken out? why am i wrong about this thinking?

There is a staging system and risk stratification for prostate cancer. The treatment is based on that, as well as patient's life expectancy. For example, for a men with very low risk disease and more than 20 years life expectancy the preferred option for treatment is active surveillance, but other options are radical prostatectomy or radiation. For each situation there are options to be discussed.
