The label applies to an area where blood flow is shared with inside the skull. Infection that 'might' enter the blood from that location could lead to meningitis or other brain infection. Failure to recognize and initiate treatment if this happened could lead to death. The cascade of events is not automatic but is possible.

Cavernous sinus thrombosis is a dire complication of infections of the nose and cheeks. Any infection there should be promptly seen and treated appropriately by a physician. Fortunately it's a rare occurrence as has been mentioned but don't take an infection in those regions lightly.
