The germ size is 1 micron, the pores in the common masks are 50-100 microns wide. Common masks are often just a sign of respect for the disease. I don't believe they do much to prevent spread or acquisition of most diseases. I don't place much value on anything but a KN95 or higher rated mask. We have been mask free where I live for over a year. Your location/government decides their mask policy.

A 3 ply surgical mask is enough if mask is still mandatory where you live. I do not favor a N-95 mask in public although it is more effective. With Omicron sub-variants, I think it's time for emphasizing natural immunity and mandate is obsolete per my humble opinion.

Masks like 3 ply surgical masks are useful for both prevention of spread of infection from infected persons and protecting individuals from acquiring infection. Virus is rarely free floating, it is carried on droplets we release on breathing, coughing sneezing etc. Masks contain the droplets and also protect you from inhaling droplets. Wear a mask, even if it is not mandated. I do.
