A member asked:

I'm very worried about colon cancer as i have constipation i think its from a terrible diet which includes eating full pringle cans in one sitting but i'm still worried about it as sometimes there is bright red blood on tissue and in the toilet bowl?

One of the most common causes of bright blood is hemorrhoidal bleeding. Hemorrhoids can occur when you strain to dedicate. One of the best things that you can do to benefit your diet, and colon health, is to increase your dietary fiber. I would recommend starting a fiber supplement (Benefiber or metamucil) once a day, and increasing it to 2 to 3 times over the next month.

There are 2 things, one that appears clear to you, constipation, possibly diet involved and health related anxiety. There are many other benign causes for bleeding specifically in the context of constipation that will have to be considered. Lifestyle changes, including diet, proper hydration and physical exercise along with a visit to your doc for an exam should help you get on the right track.

Unless you had a close family member develop colon cancer at less than 30 years of age, your risk of colon cancer is virtually nil. However, bleeding still warrants evaluation. Even hemorrhoidal bleeding can cause anemia. For constipation- You may take a fiber laxative like Metamucil and drink enough water daily so that your urine is colorless. For the long term take more fiber foods.
