Black hairy tongue is caused by bacteria and a fungus on tongue. The papillae of the tongue is normally a pinkish-white but the pigments of the bacteria and yeast cause a discoloration which is usually black. Other colors are also seen such as brown. green and yellow .Some of the causes are poor oral hygiene, smoking, drinking lots of coffee or tea, being dehydrated and certain medications.
