The window period refers to the time it takes for the tests to detect HIV within the body. No test can detect HIV immediately after infection. Per the CDC, depending on what test is used, it takes up to 90 days for a test to become positive if one is truly infected with HIV. Testing before the end of that window period risks obtaining a “false negative” result.
