A member asked:

My htn meds are metoprolol 50mg and amlodipine 2.5mg taken daily. the meds don't take effect for about 3 or 4 hours and then may be effective for about 12-15 hours before bp goes back up. are these meds effective?

In order to answer your question, you need to see a doctor in person. In general, metoprolol is used for pt with heart arrhythmia after having a heart attack or having congestive heart failure. In general, without those conditions. it is not very clinically effective for hypertension. Amlodipine 2.5 mg, is the lowest dose which I rarely use. I do like to use amlodipine at higher doses.

I am also not a fan of using beta blockers as first line treatment of hypertension unless the patient tends to have a rapid resting heart rate or history of coronary artery disease or ischemic stroke. If metoprolol is used it's best to use the succinate form which is longacting as opposed to the tartrate form. 2.5 mgs of amplodipine is a tiny dose. Consider 5mgs or add low dose HCTZ
