If you have a low serum iron and a high total iron binding capacity ( TIBC) you have documented iron deficiency. At your age monthly blood loss during menses is the most likely cause. There are nonprescription iron supplements that less constipating and your pharmacist can recommend some.

Your doctor can give you an infusion of iron and in one sitting it would take care of the iron deficiency.
