As opposed to linear atelectasis which is caused by diminished inspiration, subsegmental atelectasis is often caused by some obstruction in the airway leading th that segment of the lung. In this setting, bronchoscopic examination is frequently advised to determine the presence& cause of obstruction. If you haven't consulted a pulmonologist, do so. A thoracic surgeon would be another specialist

Retained foreign body, bronchiectasis and TB should be ruled out. If you have phlegm production, please request a sputum cytology and culture. Aspiration is another condition which may occur with GERD. Discuss whether a proton pump inhibitor may be helpful with your PCP.
