A member asked:

Can lack of sleep and exercise in themselves cause insulin resistance or is it more likely coz associated with weight gain?

Excess weight is the dominant factor leading to insulin resistance. Poor sleep and exercise habits are often part of the lifestyle that leads to weight gain, but it does not, by itself seem to be a factor.

Weight loss and regular exercise are important for improving insulin sensitivity. Patients with pre-diabetes have about 60% chance of avoiding diabetes by losing about 10% body weight and exercising 30 minutes/day.
