Sleep: If the body does not get adequate sleep over time, the cortisol level will rise and weight gain can occur. This doesn't happen after one sleepless night - usually due to cumulative fatigue over days to weeks. Adults should get 7-8 hours of sleep per night, teens 9-10.

Sleep deprivation: Some consequences of chronic sleep deprivation include obesity, heart disease and hypertension, stroke, mood disorders, increased injury, forgetfulness and decreased concentration, poor interpersonal relationships, and decreased quality of life. The average adult should sleep 7-8 hours per night, and adolescents should sleep 9. Growing children require much more.
