Potentially bitten by a stray adolescent cat 42 months ago (3.5 years ago), we kept the cat for a day and everyone said it was friendly. it also scratched me, because i held it too close to my face. do i need a rabies shot, or am i safe?

If "rabies" were present in this process, it would have been expressed by now, so it would appear by the information provided, that you are safe from this disease at this point.

The incubation time for rabies is usually days to weeks. If you do not even remember the cat biting you over 3 years ago, health related anxiety with a component of PTSD is likely, by now you should have forgotten completely the incident. Talk to your doc about your thoughts, you do not need a rabies shot.
