Pharmacologists consider benzodiazepines including Ativan (lorazepam) to be true anxiolytics (means anxiety cutter). You may be more prone to throat spasms in general but relief by Ativan is compelling evidence that anxiety plays a role. Ativan is also a muscle relaxer adding to its efficacy in this case. Don't ignore acid reflux which can permanently damage your esophagus over time.

It may be related to anxiety or not. Ativan may be effective because it also has antispasmodic (muscle relaxant) effect besides treating anxiety.
