A member asked:

Am i causing long-term problems with my rectum if i perform manual evacuation of the bowels daily? i have been doing it for ~2 years because of constipation and i need to stop doing it but i don't know how to. there's little to no pain when i do it?

This does not sound like a healthy habit, with risks of infection as well as questions of proper hygiene. Please consult with a gastroenterologist (or GI doctor). Hopefully, they may be able to help you get to the root cause of the constipation, and provide options that may help relieve it. Good luck to you!

To avoid constipation - You may take a fiber laxative like Metamucil and drink enough water daily so that your urine is colorless. For the long term you may try to increase your intake of fiber foods. Consult this site for fiber foods. http://www.mayoclinic.org/healthy-lifestyle/nutrition-and-healthy-eating/in-depth/high-fiber-foods/art-20050948 Wish you good health! Avoid doing manual evacuation.
