A member asked:

Hi doctors. if i am taking a fasting blood test for sugar, can i brush my teeth and use mouthwash before the fasting blood test? i'm concerned that the chemicals in the toothpaste or mouthwash particularly the sweeteners, might affect the test results?

Although I have no clue to the ingredients of the products you are using, they most likely will contain artificial sweeteners which would have no effect on your fasting blood sugar reading. Using refined sugar in toothpaste and mouthwash would be counterproductive, bathing your teeth with cariogenic substances.

Fasting blood sugar test tells you not to eat or drink anything at least 8-10 hours before test. Brushing teeth and mouthwash , are not swallowed , so as to interfere with the sugar amount in blood .Hold off on any medications till after test.

Drs. Trager and Davantzis are both spot-on. You wouldn't haven to swallow a lot of t'paste and mouth wash ton have any affect one your blood sugar. Brush your teeth with just plain water, then floss, and younwill remove almost all the bacteria on your teeth. M'wash about 1% useful.
