A member asked:

Hi doctors. for a fasting blood test to check glucose and cholesterol, how long should i fast..how much time do i need the night before? also, can i use mouthwash or brush my teeth or could the chemicals interfere with the fasting blood test results?

General rule: We generally want you to not consume anything past midnight of the evening prior to the test. Mouthwash you spit out & brushing teeth does not effect the tests. I like the patient to get the test in the morning prior to a visit or just the test after which they go for brunch.
